Howletts Wild Animal Park spans 100 acres of ancient parkland just outside Canterbury and is home to over 300 animals across more than 52 species. It is the only place in Kent where you can see the UK's largest herd of African elephants, and it holds the world's largest breeding group of western lowland gorillas in human care.
Summer 2026 Events: Summer Roar runs from 20 July to 31 August at Howletts, with themed activities, keeper-led fun and family conservation events across the park. Capybara Week runs from 20 to 26 July, followed by Big Cat Week from 27 July to 2 August.
The park is designed for walking, with generally flat tarmac paths and a few gentle slopes. Most families spend between three and four hours exploring, though many stay longer. Keeper talks are scheduled throughout the day and posted on the talk boards at the Gatehouse entrance; these are free and included in your ticket.
The Lemur Walk-Through Experience is one of the park's standout features. Visitors walk through an accessible enclosure where ring-tailed, crowned, and red-bellied lemurs roam freely. The enclosure has no steps and wide doors, making it suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs.
The Animals of the Ice Age trail takes you through a woodland walk featuring life-sized models of prehistoric creatures including a woolly mammoth and a sabre-toothed Smilodon. Joshi's Jungle is the park's adventure playground, giving younger children space to run and climb between animal encounters.
Howletts is suitable for all ages. Children aged 3 to 15 must be accompanied by an adult. For a full list of what else is happening nearby, see our Howletts Wild Animal Park attraction page.
